Why are Protein Shakes a Healthy Choice?

Why are meal replacement shakes (protein shakes) useful for active individuals? The first thing to understand about protein is that it does not make the muscle bigger by drinking it; it instead helps replenish the stressed muscle fibers in the recovery process. The body stores protein and amino acids in a pool that it draws from as needed, so drinking and eating protein within your diet keeps this protein pool satisfied for future use. The protein left over after the body has utilized what it has needed is burned off as energy. Amino Acids and protein along with carbohydrates are the building blocks for muscle recovery from any activity that stresses the muscle fibers. This stress can come from running, playing sports, weight training (light or heavy), or from an active job. Therefore it’s important to provide your body with adequate protein to aid in muscle recovery. Providing your body with adequate nutrition such as protein will help your metabolism work harder and assist in burning unwanted body fat. The active individual needs approximately 0.6grams of protein for every 1lb that they weigh. For example if you weight 130lbs and exercise on a regular basis you should be consuming around 78grams of protein a day. Another benefit of adequate protein amounts in your diet is satisfying your appetite to help avoid craving unhealthy food choices!
